froxlor Development Update – Looking Ahead

Dear froxlor community, today we'd like to share some thoughts about the current state of froxlor development and where we see the project heading in the future. Many of you know that froxlor has been an open-source project for a very long time. Some of us have been maintaining and developing it for well over a decade, through countless releases, feature additions, bug fixes and architectural changes. Over the years, one thing has always driven us: building something useful while actually enjoying the process. Recently, however, the nature of project maintenance has changed significantly. Like many other open-source projects, we are receiving an increasing number of security reports generated or heavily assisted by AI tools. While some of these reports identify legitimate issues and are absolutely appreciated, a large portion require extensive manual investigation before we can even determine whether a vulnerability actually exists. The result is that an ever-growing amount of development time is spent reviewing, reproducing, verifying and responding to reports instead of improving the software itself. As the froxlor development team currently consists of only two active developers, this has become a serious challenge. We want to be very clear: Security remains important and we will continue to investigate and fix legitimate issues. At the same time, we also need to ensure that project maintenance does not completely consume the time and energy required for actual development. For this reason, we have decided to gradually shift our focus: The current 2.x branch will enter a maintenance-oriented phase. Critical bugs and important security issues will continue to be addressed, but development on the 2.x series will be kept to an absolute minimum. Our primary goal moving forward is to focus our efforts on the next major generation of froxlor: version 3.0. We believe that investing our limited time into a modernized architecture, long-term maintainability and future improvements will ultimately benefit the project and the community far more than endlessly extending the lifecycle of the current branch. froxlor exists because of its users, contributors and supporters, and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who has helped the project grow over the years. Hallo zusammen, ich habe die oft die Notwendigkeit, DNS-Einträge zu ändern. Aktuell löse ich das dadurch, dass ich den DNS-Eintrag per C&P im Editor speichere, den Eintag dann im DNS-Editor lösche und aus den gespeicherten (und veränderten) Daten neu erstelle. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, den Eintrag im Froxlor-Panel direkt zu ändern?

Hi, Just upgraded from 2.3.6 to 2.3.7 on debian 12, unable to login as admin. Tried Edge, Chrome & Brave - credentials are correct. Services are all functioning and I have ssh access. Please advice. Regards, Dudi

Didn't know apt-file search or apt-cache search or aptitude if your distro is debian-like? Other distros may have other tools for searching programs like yast, yum and so far For debian/ubuntu family you'll install "quota" and "quotatool" to get mentioned binaries.

Hello! Thank you for all the assistance so far! Today, I modified a user to have 3MB of stored, then uploaded a 414MB file. I adjusted the Web- and Traffic- Reports cronjob to run every 8 hours instead of once a day. After a few hours, the cron ran and the traffic bar updated to 416.69 MiB / 3.00 MiB. However, the user can still upload more files. Although not tested, this makes me wonder if exceeding the traffic limit allows the user's website to keep getting more hits past the limit. I noticed the Quota option in System > Settings > Quota, however the directories listed there (/usr/bin/quotatool and /usr/sbin/repquota) do not exist (Even after activating Quota and rebuilding configuration files). I found a GitHub repository with a similar name (https://github.com/ekenberg/quotatool), but could not find any documentation that connects it to Froxlor. Does Froxlor has a way to suspend uploads and file creation activity when account quotas are reached and deactivating the user when traffic limits are reached? Thank you!

For future reference, I managed to resolve this by setting error_log = {CUSTOMER_HOMEDIR}error_logs/php_errors.log in php.ini and chown :www-data the error_logs folder.

it's currently only the last 1000 lines iirc, depending on the customer, these logs can get HUGE and froxlor won't be able to load them (or php timeouts etc.). Maybe we will think of a better solution for froxlor3, this is unlikely to change in 2.x

Ich habe zusätzlich noch eine Idee gehabt: Ich habe das Profil vom Admin-User geändert und die Sprache von Englisch auf Deutsch umgestellt. Dadurch konnte ich noch einmal bestätigen, dass die Datenbankverbindung funktioniert def_language hat sich von en auf de geändert.

Schon mal danke, ich habe da auch einen Fehler entdeckt: meine panel_customers Tabelle wollte nicht altered werden. Ich habe deshalb zusätzlich ALTER TABLE panel_customers ROW_FORMAT=DYNAMIC; ausgeführt, danach konnte ich dann die neue Spalte hinzufügen. Leider ist das Ergebnis soweit das selbe: keine neuen Logs im froxlor/logs Directory und auch nur der bereits erwähnte ajax.php Fehler weil $result['last_update_check'] = $uc_data['ts']; nicht ausgeführt werden konnte.

ah okay, ja von 0.10.x ist aber auch wirklich...puh....also deine datenbank hat auf jedenfall noch den stand von 0.10.25 und deine dateien sind 2.3.5 - d.h. da ist noch genau kein Datenbank-Update gelaufen, weil ein 2.x featuer (gui_access) dich davon abhält. Am besten machst du nun Folgendes: 1) MySQL, manuell: ALTER TABLE `panel_admins` ADD `gui_access` tinyint(1) NOT NULL default '1'; ALTER TABLE `panel_customers` ADD `gui_access` tinyint(1) NOT NULL default '1';2) Damit das Update nicht versucht, die Felder anzulegen: 2.1) Öffne ./install/updates/froxlor/update_2.2.inc.php 2.2) Lösche diese vier Zeilen (Zeile 98-101 müsste das sein): Update::showUpdateStep("Enhancing admin and user table"); Database::query("ALTER TABLE `" . TABLE_PANEL_ADMINS . "` ADD `gui_access` tinyint(1) NOT NULL default '1';"); Database::query("ALTER TABLE `" . TABLE_PANEL_CUSTOMERS . Ich komme dann nur wieder auf die Update-Seite: Ich setze die Checkmarks die ich gerne hätte, aktiviere unten dass ich die Upgrade Notes gelesen habe und klicke auf Proceed, dann komme ich auf die Database Integrity Seite wo alles gut ist: Und komme wieder aufs Dashboard das aussieht wie oben. Keine Fehlermeldungen in der Browser Netzwerkkonsole, nur die genannte ajax.php Fehlermeldung im Apache Log und keine neuen Fehlermeldungen im Froxlor Log. Eine Sache habe ich nur noch gefunden: im Froxlor Log sehe ich |CODE 42S22 |MSG SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column 'gui_access' in 'field list' |FILE /var/www/html/froxlor/lib/Froxlor/Database/Database.php |LINE 122 |TRACE #0 /var/www/html/froxlor/lib/Froxlor/Database/Database.php(122): PDOStatement->execute() #1 /var/www/html/froxlor/lib/Froxlor/Api/Commands/Admins.php(759): Froxlor\Database\Database::pexecute() #2 /var/www/html/froxlor/admin_index.php(270): Froxlor\Api\Commands\Admins->update() #3 {main}Die Log-Zeile wurde wohl beim Start von Froxlor geschrieben, zumindest passt die Uptime zusammen.

irgendwas lässt dein froxlor glauben, dass die Dateien neuer sind als die (froxlor) Datenbank. Mit Sicherheit ist hier bei so einem massiven Versions-Sprung irgendwo was hängengeblieben. Was genau wird denn angezeigt, wenn du links im Menü auf "froxlor update" klickst, ggfls lässt sich hier einsehen wo er aufgehört hat und wo der Updater dann ggfls crashed

Hi! Ich habe von meinem Hoster bei der Installation vom V-Server Froxlor vorinstalliert gehabt und Froxlor genutzt um mir einen Mail-Account einzurichten und danach das ganze Teil so ziemlich in Ruhe gelassen. Das hat ewig lang funktioniert und auch jetzt scheint es noch weiter zu laufen, meine E-Mails kommen immer noch auf die damals eingerichtete E-Mail Adresse an. Ich wollte nach all den Jahren dann aber doch mal wieder gucken: Was kann Froxlor eigentlich alles so und bin auf die Seite gegangen. Dort wurde ich dann nach Admin-Login gefragt um das Update das mit meinen Server-Updates wahrscheinlich ohne dass ich es bemerkt habe im Hintergrund eingespielt wurde zu vollenden. Soweit so gut. Das Update geht über 4 Minor Versionen: von 0.10.25 auf 2.3.5. Wahrscheinlich von Debian 9 auf Debian 12 wenn man alles zusammenzählt. Nun, ich klicke die Einstellungen an, die ich gerne hätte, Froxlor geht einen Schritt weiter und zeigt mir einen grünen Haken bei Database Integrity. Ich klicke aufs Dashboard und sehe das Dashboard. Anzahl E-Mails, anzahl User etc. Alles korrekt dargestellt. Nur das Update beendet sich nicht. Links in der Seite sehe ich nur weiterhin das "froxlor update" und auch nach etwas Warten falls die Cron-Tasks etwas machen, passiert nichts. Ich finde auch keine wirklich hilfreichen Logs, weder in /var/www/html/froxlor/logs, noch anderswo. Nur in den Apache2 Error Logs sehe ich Trying to access array offset on value of type null in /var/www/html/froxlor/lib/Froxlor/Ajax/Ajax.php on line 202, referer: https://<>/froxlor/admin_settings.php?page=phpinfo Wie ihr wahrscheinlich schon gelesen habt: ich bin total unerfahren was Froxlor angeht und habe keine große Ahnung wie ich weiter debuggen kann, um mein Panel wieder lauffähig zu bekommen. Bin deshalb über jede Hilfe dankbar.
