Regarding the alleged security issue by php-friends

Hello Froxlor-community and worried users,

as there were a lot of noise regarding this "security issue" which initially came from
php-friends.de i contacted them to ask where the problem is.

They did answer me and gave a bit of information where a possible leak could exist in the Froxlor code. They told me to keep this confidential so I won't tell any details.

To reassure you Dessa and I tested the situation with the given information and there is actually no possibility this particular "problem" is a security issue in Froxlor. Whether using mod_php nor using fcgid.

To be clear: we have only tested a particular problem which we got information about by php-friends. I don't know if there is more or whether this was the only security issue php-friends found.

regards

Froxlor Debian package & FCGID users:
An improvement in the Debian package updating process prevents the former problem that the owner will be reset after updating. See #430 for more information.

Note: It's important to set the correct owner and group for the Froxlor web directory before a upgrade (if it's not already set). The new postinst-script chown's the Froxlor web directory with the former set credentials.

We also would like to introduce you an experimental service:

Improving the Froxlor server installation process

Dear Froxies,

the Froxlor team would like to start a discussion about the Froxlor server installation on GNU/ Linux Debian.

Some of you may noticed that there are some users on froxlor.forum.org, which published (bash) scripts to automate the installation and configuring process of Froxlor and daemons/ services on the server.

Examples:

http://forum.froxlor...debian-squeeze/
http://forum.froxlor...f-config-files/

I've also started to write a script with the following tasks in January 2011:

Execute apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Install all necessary (Debian) packages, stored in a separate file

Create all necessary directories (web directories for Froxlor, pma, etc.)

Setup FCGI scripts for Froxlor (now supported by Froxlor itself), pma, etc.

Download tarballs and extract: Froxlor, phpMyAdmin and Roundcube Webmail

Copy Froxlor's configuration templates to a temporary directory, replace the placeholders (stored in a separate file), move to daemon's config directory

Add some important config entries to apache.conf (Indexes, Charset, ServerSignature, etc.)

Setup vhosts for Froxlor (now also supported by Froxlor itself), pma, etc.

Setup cronscript(s)

any many more

Some of these tasks are also handled in the bash scripts, provided by the community users (see above given links).

I continued on this project which grows to a big project (~5000 code lines, ~300h working time, logging, automatic updating/installing/configuring/etc.)

Due to some (more or less) insecure commands, provided in the scripts (see links on top), I want to sum the ideas up to a centralized solution, which is supported and maintained (managed) by the official Froxlor team.

Ideas:

A possible solution would be to use Debian's debconf for the post/pre install & remove scripts to configure/ setup the whole server with Froxlor.

Let's suggest the following things:

install Froxlor via apt with predefined dependencies (daemons/services/packages/etc.)

Ask the user (using debconf) which setup he want to use, e.g. (FCGI, FPM, etc.). If FCGI, ask if FCGI will be used within the Froxlor vHost (=> ask the future username to chown, fix #430)

Ask the user (using debconf) if the daemons/ services on the systems (like MTA, MDA, FTPD, etc.) should be configured (with Froxlor's configuration templates) or handle the questions with an extra file, where the answers are stored

etc.

Next to Dessa, who is maintaining the current package(s) (Debian), I would take the work and responsibility to this minor project.

Your turn:

What do you think about this?
Give us your feedback!
Please participate on the poll above.

We want to keep on the following points an eye:

This project will NOT(!!!) replace the system administrator. You have to understand which jobs are performed by the provided scripts and why. You have to know what to do, if there are manual interventions.

The scripts are performing very critical and important steps. Please note that this project will enjoy more time/work to be secure and stable than integrate a lot of features & functions in a short time.

You are using software (like any other) on your own risk. Although of the strict tests of the scripts, we're not responsible for any damage which the scripts would cause!

It will NOT(!!!) performing any automatic updates. That's your job, because YOU have to decide what should be updated or not!

We will try to document all the stuff as well as possible.

We are glad to hear from you.

The Froxlor Debian package(s)

Dear Froxies,

the Froxlor team would like to start a discussion about the Froxlor Debian package(s) and how they can be improved.

Current state:

You can source the Debian package via the Froxlor Debian Repository on http://debian.froxlor.org/ or downloading the *.deb file via http://debian.froxlor.org/pool/main/f/froxlor/ .

The package contains currently the Debian specific package dependencies and recommendations:

Dependencies:
apache2 | lighttpd | nginx, php5, php5-cli, php5-mysql, mysql-server, mysql-client, mysql-common, webalizer | awstats, libphp-phpmailer (>= 5.1), wwwconfig-common

Recommendations:
postfix-mysql | exim4-daemon-heavy, libsasl2-modules-sql, maildrop, courier-authlib-mysql | dovecot-common, courier-imap | dovecot-imapd, courier-pop | dovecot-pop3d, php5-gd, php5-suhosin, php5-imap, proftpd-mod-mysql | pure-ftpd-mysql, bind9

--

So we (I) got a lot of feedback about this structure. If you install Froxlor with "apt-get install froxlor" from the Froxlor repository, there will be a lot of packages prepared to install.

Many users want to install Froxlor WITHOUT any additional software, they have to configure apt to ignore the above depend. and recom.

There are a lot of users, who just enter the command and don't know what they install.

Ideas:

What about the Debian package dependencies/ suggestions/ recommendations? Do we really need them? Since Froxlor requires only a webserver, PHP and MySQL, we're able to drop the following dependences/ suggestion/ recommendation categories:

Webserver
MySQL-Server
FTPd
Mailserver (MDA & MTA)

This wouldn't cut any features. The installation tutorials should just be expanded to install additional packages (which the user really wants).

Old installation command:
apt-get install froxlor

New installation command:
apt-get install froxlor mysql-server apache2 [...]

Another solution would be to create an additional package, next to the current one. This would be a package with plain dependencies (like the properties described above).

What would you prefer?

Your turn:
Beside this few fixes we are currently refactoring the whole system. This is done in a separate branch and is NOT included in this release. In the current version showing errors like in the images below isn't possible.
The old base isn't state of the art and pretty inflexible.

Hello Froxies,

One day later than usual due to the easter - holidays, we are proud to present Froxlor 0.9.20.

Beside a lot of bugfixes, we included two new features: A summary of all customer - traffic visible for the admin and a backup - system for customer webspaces and databases. These features were coded by our community - members yabawock and monotek, thanks. We sadly had to postpone the IP - multistack, since it is not stable enough for a release yet.

Leaving the dev-team

Dear community,

this is my last official post as I am leaving the development team of Froxlor. This decision was hard to make and I have been thinking about this for weeks.

As you might know, I've always tried to be as active and present as possible and I wanted to push Froxlor to be a bad-ass control-panel. During the last weeks (or even months) the dev-team became more and more silent and absence which lead to the point where I didn't have anymore fun participating to the project because I was more or less the only one doing something (not completely but almost).

I'm sorry for Froxlor and I hope the dev-team will get back together as it was in the beginnings.
I also wish all the best for the rewrite (Froxlor-1.0) as it has some very good ideas.
